The Geoportal: A key component of the Infrastructure Observatory
October 2025
The South American Infrastructure Observatory aims to gather and systematize high-quality, up-to-date information on infrastructure, transportation, and logistics.
One of the tools for consulting and visualizing this information is the Geoportal, a key component of the Observatory’s digital platform.
The development of the Geoportal is a collaborative process, as the 12 participating countries provide thematic layers based on a standardization methodology agreed upon by the countries themselves.
Some of the most notable resources and services based on geographic information include:
- Map viewer
- Geoservices
- Metadata catalog
- Project documentation (Object Catalog and Data Dictionary)
- Open data downloads
In terms of content, the Geoportal offers an initial collection of thematic layers that includes:
- Road network
- Railway network
- Train stations
- Navigable waterways
- Cities
- Localities
The Observatory’s Geoportal seeks to become a strategic tool for decision-making based on validated information, accessible through the platform.
